Pauline Burgess from Barrow-in-Furness left school without any qualifications, coming from what was perceived to be a disadvantaged area of Barrow. As a parent Pauline was determined to support her own children with learning and help improve her community.

David Haigh from Carlisle. Following several years as an offender, David was placed in a hostel with access to learning. Initially he attended the hostel education programme to fill his time, but as he experienced success and attained qualifications, he became motivated to continue.
